DISCOVER DRY NEEDLING IN VOGUE CLINIC - ESTEPONA

Dry needling is an invasive physiotherapy technique, used to remove muscle trigger points. These ´pain points´ may have been generated due to overloads or sudden movements etc. The treatment is called Dry Needling because no anaesthetic or substance is introduced.

HOW DOES DRY NEEDLING WORK IN THE BODY?

Dry needling into the muscle causes relaxation and restores blood circulation. It does this by activating biochemical changes, which causes an evacuation of algogenous substances (serotonin), bradykinin, etc.  These substances are released at myofascial trigger points, stimulating tissue repair mechanisms. The introduction of the needle into the trigger point provokes a local spasm response.

At its entrance into the muscle, the needle focally injures the myocytes. This is due to the smaller diameter of the myocytes. However, these lesions are completely regenerated without the risk of fibrous scarring.

WHAT CONDITIONS DOES DRY NEEDLING TREAT?

Any pathology that occurs with myofascial pain, both locally and remotely.

  • Tendinopathies
  • Muscle injuries in sports
  • Dorsalgias
  • Low back pain
  • Cervicalgias
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Shoulder injuries
  • Migraines or headaches

HOW MANY SESSIONS DO I NEED?

The number of sessions varies according to the severity of the musculoskeletal pathology incurred.

Here at Vogue Clinic, we recommend as a guideline, ten alternate-day sessions. This is often sufficient to fully treat the pain.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF DRY NEEDLE TREATMENT?

Typically, the patient may experience some post-puncture pain and bruising. However, this usually only lasts between a few hours and 2 days.  The application of ice or heat to the area or applying massage for the treated muscle can alleviate this pain.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

There are certain cases in which Dry Needling is not recommended. There are others where we recommend you to take a series of precautions and factors into account.

  • Fear of needles
  • Coagulation problems
  • Areas with wounds or scars, tattoos, spots, injuries
  • Metal sensitivity
  • In Pregnancy (in areas near the pelvic and abdominal areas)

HOW LONG DO THE BENEFITS OF DRY NEEDLING LAST?

The results of Dry Needling may vary, dependent upon one´s lifestyle, physical activity and diet.

CAN DRY NEEDLING BE COMBINED WITH OTHER TYPES OF TREATMENTS TO OPTIMIZE RESULTS?

Yes, usually the mini-invasive dry needling technique is used with massage therapy, physiotherapy and osteopathy to increase its effectiveness.
